Hofmann’s theory of pushing and pulling a composition on a two-dimensional surface is best understood when drawing from life with charcoal on paper. The course begins with a lecture on Hofmann’s push/pull theory by viewing work from the collection. We continue with two hours of drawing and then a break for lunch. The workshop reconvenes for critique. Each artist, no matter what their level of experience, will leave with a deeper understanding of the theories that shape modern art. Affirming and insightful feedback will create the ability for you to further explore figure drawing.

Laura Shabott is a graduate from SMFA at TUFTS. Emily Mergel of Artscope Magazine writes “[the artist] continually draws inspiration from abstract expressionist Hans Hofmann and breaks forms into their most evocative essential…she seizes the opportunity to burst the gallery walls, speaking with intentional gesture in visual vocabulary all her own.” Shabott is now represented by Berta Walker Gallery.
