The PAAM Board of Trustees has come together to offer an exceptional challenge to our members, supporters and friends. For every dollar you donate to the Museum, we will match your donation 1:1 up to $50,000, to double the impact of your contribution to PAAM.
This extraordinary opportunity paves the way for PAAM to raise $100,000, which will cover the museum’s operating and recovery expenses as we reopen pursuant with Phase III of Governor Baker’s Reopening Massachusetts plan.
It’s no secret that this is a challenging moment for nonprofits. But it’s also no secret that PAAM has survived a great deal in its 106-year old history: the 1917 Pandemic, The Great Depression, The Vietnam War, the AIDS epidemic, 9/11 and the crash of 2008. At PAAM’s darkest hour in the post-Depression years, the books showed a balance of only $3.60.
With strong community support, PAAM made it through all of it. As we move forward during this new crisis, every day finds the staff shifting exhibition schedules, postponing fundraisers, and transitioning to virtual, rather than in-person, workshops. But once again, we turn to you, our community, for the strength and support to endure. And as we move through this together, we are thinking about ways to re-imagine PAAM in the age of COVID-19 such as enhanced digital content and utilizing our streets and storefronts to view images from our important collection.
PAAM is your museum. You come to experience the exhibitions, to discover a bit of Provincetown – a place to which you are connected. You take classes to better understand how the Cape Cod light worked its way into so many artists’ minds and canvases. You submit work to member exhibitions, and proudly show it to friends and family, hanging on the wall where, in 2018, a Helen Frankenthaler painting occupied the same space. We are beyond grateful to provide the space for you to have these experiences, and we are dedicated to ensuring that you will continue to regard PAAM as a safe refuge, a place to embrace the art and the history of this special place.
The pandemic has hit PAAM hard. We operate with a staff of ten year-round residents, and are proud that we’ve been able to keep our staff employed, especially when so many museums around the world are not able to do the same. Each month, PAAM’s operating expenses (mortgages, salaries, utilities, etc.) cost $80,000. That’s before any visitor, student, curator, scholar, or intern comes into the building. We were thrilled to welcome you back to the space in early July; to your space. Enhanced safety protocols such as hand sanitizers, more frequent cleanings, masks and reduced timed ticketless entry are just some of the ways that we are making PAAM safer for you. What’s become so apparent these past few months is that no matter what, PAAM only exists and thrives because of the life you bring inside.
Please consider making a donation to PAAM today, double your impact through the Board Match Challenge, and ensure that your Museum will be waiting for you when you’re ready to come back and see us.
