SERENA ROTHSTEIN: Discourse in Paint
PAAM 2008 exhibition catalogue
From 1948 to 1952 Serena Rothstein studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1951 she showed her work at Duveen Brothers, New York, in a group exhibition entitled ‘The Expansionists’ — other Hofmann students in the show included Jan Muller, Felix Pasilis, and John Grillo.
New Yorker critic Robert Coates — who in a review of the show, coined the phrase Abstract Expressionism — noted that the only work he really admired was by Serena Rothstein, “… especially, her somber, well-organized ‘Compulsion'”
