PAUL RESIKA: Houses in Provence
With there luminous olive trees and terra-cotta roofed houses, Paul Resika’s Provencal landscapes catch us up in the excitement of the world observed and transformed into the shapes and color of art. In “Blue Tree”(front cover) for example, a swoosh of pale blue pigment atop 2 sinuous purple strokes creates space for a flesh colored plane held in place by an indigo sky. It is our participation in the painting’s abstract qualities that precipitates illusion; now we see not marks on canvas but a sunlit house behind a tree. Resika is a master at giving us the pleasure of going back and forth between marks and image.
