Online Workshop: Using Color with the Figure for Artists Who Want to Learn Hofmann’s Push/Pull Theory with Laura Shabott and Alana Barrett

February 7 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

February 7 | Sunday, 10-2pm | $125 for members, $150 for non-members

Hofmann’s theory of push/pull, a principle based on the natural laws of oscillation, was the catalyst for two generations of Abstract Expressionists. Shabott and Barrett contemporize his work through courses that delve into the concept, application and use of the push/pull theory in making art.

With the figure as our muse and prompt, we will explore how color and shape respond to the figure through the lens of modernist principles. The course begins a lecture about Josef Albers, moving into a basic color theory module and moving onto the model to apply these ideas. Artists will leave with a deeper understanding of how color moves in and out of a two-dimensional surface in response to the figure.

Everyone is welcome.

Laura Shabott discovered Provincetown and settled there while finishing her diploma from the SMFA at TUFTS. About her work, Emily Mergel writes in Artscope Magazine “Shabott continually draws inspiration from abstract expressionist Hans Hofmann and breaks forms into their most evocative essentials…She seizes the opportunity to burst the gallery walls, speaking with intentional gesture in visual vocabulary all her own.”

Shabott shows with Berta Walker Gallery, Provincetown; with exhibits at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Ely Center for Contemporary Arts (New Haven), Fine Arts Work Center, Four Eleven Gallery, Provincetown Art Association and Museum and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill.

Alana Barrett is a multidisciplinary artist that works across a variety of two dimensional and three dimensional mediums, including paint, woodworking, electronics and fabrics. Her work spans a variety of subject matter from robotic sculptures to hard-edged abstract paintings. All of her work, however, is united by playful spatial relationships, whimsical perspectives, and her curious nature and willingness to experiment.

She is currently teaching art courses on topics such as abstract art, Han’s Hofmann’s principle of “push/pull”, figurative expression, color theory, and more, at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and The Art Guild.

She also works as a leader and creator of “The Art Hang” – a free online community course that aims to harness the social power of art in order to decolonize, democratize, and discuss creative fields.

Alana is a recent graduate of the University of Miami, with an undergraduate degree in Studio Art.
