Provincetown Plein Air Adventure with Susan Overstreet

July 20 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am

5 SESSIONS: JULY 20 – JULY 24, 8:30-11:30AM

Experience the joys of painting outdoors while viewing the beautiful and iconic scenes of Provincetown and surrounding areas. Cape Cod artist Susan Overstreet likens plein air painting to catching fish. You never know what you will bring home, but it is always fun!

Goals for the workshop:

Familiarize students with the unique aspects of plein air painting: setting up your easel prepared for the ever-changing light, capturing the unique colors and atmosphere; and responding to the spontaneity of the day. Materials will be discussed and each day will start with a demonstration and end with individual feedback.

Learn to choose compositions from an overwhelming array of perspectives employing quick thumbnail sketches with attention to foreground, middle ground and background.
Gain confidence in seeing and choosing vibrant colors. Learn to mix colors from a limited palette and block in colors quickly.

Susan Overstreet’s creative process of weaving vibrant colors with a staccato technique of palette knife and brushwork captures a visual tapestry between abstract imagery and representation. Overstreet’s bold expressive style is driven by unique natural elements found on Cape Cod that offer an evolving kaleidoscope of color.

“I work quickly. Capturing the subject extemporaneously is vital to breathing life into it visually,” explains Overstreet. “Knowing what the paint can do by experimenting with its properties, I move the paint around the canvas until the image emerges.”
