The Train (1964)

Directed by John Frankenheimer. With Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield and Jeanne Moreau. Black and white. 2 hours, 13 minutes.

What’s more important, art or life? Or is the distinction ultimately irrelevant? This tense and bitter World War II drama, about a train of looted art masterpieces on its way to the Third Reich, caps off a run of John Frankenheimer ’60s classics, after Birdman of Alcatraz, The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May.

The Provincetown Film Art Series, now in its 14th year, is sponsored by the Provincetown Film Society (PFS) and Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), and curated and hosted by Howard Karren, arts editor of the Provincetown Independent. Wednesday screenings are at 7 pm every other week except as noted at the Waters Edge Cinema in Provincetown, 237 Commercial St. (Whaler’s Wharf, 2nd floor), and are introduced and followed by a discussion.
