It Starts with a Feeling: Painting Between Place and Memory with Pete Hocking

August 31 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

* HELD OUTDOORS *

5 SESSIONS: AUGUST 31 – SEPTEMBER 4, 10AM-3PM

$380 FOR MEMBERS, $400 FOR NON-MEMBERS | JOIN OR RENEW

Great landscape paintings inspire memory and feeling. They reveal something of the painter’s experience, but also provide opportunities for a viewer to bring memory and emotion into the picture. Direct, spontaneous picture making (painting, drawing, photography) allows a painter to capture something ephemeral and unexpected, and slower work in the studio provides space for considered composition.

Working within the Provincetown landscape, over five days we’ll build a series of twenty-five small, fast paintings and several larger works in the studio. Each morning, 10am until noon, we’ll meet in the field and build an archive of spontaneous pictures. Participants will be encouraged to also draw and make photographs in the field as time allows. After lunch, from 1pm to 3pm, we’ll meet in the PAAM studios to build larger paintings. In addition to making work together, we’ll look at painting together (both from the class and form the history of art) and discuss strategies for building evocative, exciting images. Some experience with painting is useful, but not required for this workshop.

Pete Hocking is a visual artist and writer based in Provincetown & Truro, MA.

In addition to being represented by Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, he’s recently shown with the Chazan Gallery in Providence, RI, The Dorado Project in Jersey City, NJ, the Plough Gallery in Tifton, GA, and at VeeVee in Boston, MA. In May 2019 he was an artist-in-residence at the Hawthorne Barn with Twenty Summers. He is the lead faculty of Goddard College’s Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts program and teaches in the Division of Liberal Arts at Rhode Island School of Design. He’s a founding board member of the Provincetown Commons, an economic development center for the arts and creative economy.
