Zen and the Art of Pastel in the Landscape

In this workshop, open to all levels, participants will practice the art of pastel painting working in different nearby locations. In most pastel classes, there is a particular technique that is taught leaving little room for personal discovery. Here we will explore the material itself and the way it interacts with different papers and toned backgrounds. Pastels are a light and free medium and if we allow it, can be a liberating experience. In essence, they are like crayons, allowing us to freely move them over a surface. There will also be emphases on one aspect of color, tonality and form during each session. The workshop is ideal for individuals interested in a relaxed approach to working outdoors, while utilizing the accessible and satisfying medium of chalk pastels – a tradition going back thousands of years. There will be demonstrations each day and examples of how the different masters have used the medium.
