Visual Research & Painting from Source Material
Painters draw inspiration from sources, be it observation, experience, dreams, imagination, objects, writing, photographs, mirrors, drawings, or other manifestations of visual culture. Approaching painting as a subjective art form, this workshop will consider ways artists undertake visual research and transform source material (as opposed to simply reproducing it) into original artworks. It is designed to develop several new paintings (ideally one a day). Participants are encouraged to bring source material of interest to them and, weather permitting; we’ll also engage in short field trips to do visual research in town. The course is designed for students interested in oil or acrylic painting, but multimedia approaches are also encouraged.
