Master Class in Fundamentals: A Painting Workshop
This is a three day intensive workshop, open to all levels, taught by Donald Beal and Rob DuToit. Mornings will involve working from the still life and model. In the afternoons we will venture into the landscape taking our studio experience to the local waters, dunes and forest. Beal and DuToit will alternate mornings and afternoons so students will benefit from their individual perspectives on picture making in different contexts. The first day we will begin with a tonal exploration of the picture surface, gaining insight into the abstract structure of tonal values that underlies good painting. We will then move on to limited color and eventually a full color palette, exploring how we can compose with color in it’s own right. During lunch hour there will be daily slide shows of work by the old and modern masters appropriate to the day’s study. Don and Rob will be painting alongside participants and will offer a demonstration each day.
