Landscape as Memoir
Memoir is the art of memory. It doesn’t chart facts, rather uses memory to navigate meaning. In this workshop, we will develop at least five paintings from prompts to memory — family photographs, vivid recollections, objects, or research of places we’ve inhabited. Participants may also choose to undertake self-portrait work — as a means of charting the landscape of the mind and body. For participants new to painting, the workshop will support learning about materials. For all participants, it will provide a context for advancing one’s ability to develop compelling compositions and images. Participants are encouraged to bring source material of interest to them and can continue to do visual research using the week. The workshop is designed for students interested in oil or acrylic painting, but multimedia approaches are also encouraged.
