Color and Light in the Provincetown Tradition

“…the mechanics of putting one spot of color next to another — the fundamental thing.”  Charles Webster Hawthorne

Using principles of observation and study originally taught by Charles Hawthorne and later Henry Hensche, this class will endeavor to develop a student’s ability to see and express color and light in their paintings. The lessons are applicable to all types of painting…landscape, still life and figure…and all media. The class is suitable for everyone, beginners to seasoned professionals. As much as possible, the classes will be held outdoors to take full advantage of the unique and beautiful light in Provincetown.

In addition to color lessons, classes will also include short demonstrations, and discussions of composition, perspective, and materials, as well as the history of Provincetown as an art colony.
