Cathy has been teaching children and adults of all ages for thirty years. Each week has a theme and medium that will be explored in addition to warm up time and personal choice time. Participants are encouraged to try new materials and methods and to expand their creations while working in this fun space. Cathy works with each student, on their own level, making suggestions of ideas and techniques to carry a project to the next step while respecting the individual’s sense of aesthetics and design.
July 5 Draw-A-Thon
Pencils, charcoal, pastels and other media help us explore drawing techniques and "tricks" including perspective, scale, light and shade.
July 11-12 Your Own 12 x 12”
Take a trip into the galleries to look at the more than 300 pieces in the members’ annual 12x12” exhibition. Which is your favorite and why? How many media can you find? Are any similar? After checking them out, we’ll make our own.
July 18-19 Paint & Colors
Using red, yellow & blue, and a little white, learn about the color wheel, primary and secondary colors, and how create our very own shade. You’ll be amazed to see just what you can make.
July 25-26 Outside Adventures
Go outside to the beach and yard! Using watercolor and pastels we’ll make landscape and seascapes.
August 1-2 All About Abstraction
What is abstract? What does it mean? What do you see? Is it something different than what I see? Together we’ll figure out what it means for work to be abstract and create our own, while looking at the exhibition Robert Motherwell: Beside the Sea.
August 8-9 Portraits: People & Animals
Want to create a picture of your family or Fido? Portraits can be one of the toughest things! We’ll look at some famous, funny, and odd ones before making our own. Make a huge painting of a tiny bug, or a tiny drawing of a huge whale. Life-sized portraits or tons of small images to make up a larger image are all fun possibilities.
August 15 Fantasy & Imagination
Listen to the great story of the Provincetown Sea Monster and see how your own creature emerges from far beyond, under the water, or out in space.
August 22-23 Collages and Mobiles
What will you build? Dive into our endless stash of materials, including beads, newspapers, buttons, magazines, fancy papers, and so much more. How will it balance? Will it make noise? Do you want to hang it or sit it on the shelf?

Cathy Skowron has been an artist and educator on outer Cape Cod since 1969. Her interest in and love of the natural landscape is reflected in her art and her life. When painting or teaching she likes to consider Robert Bresson’s statement “make visible what, without you, might perhaps have never been seen.” She has an MA in Education from Goddard College, and her writings on critical and creative thinking and alternative assessment have been included in numerous books and manuscripts for educators. She studied art in France, Italy, and on Cape Cod with Carol Whorf Westcott, Salvatore Del Deo and Elizabeth Pratt. Skowron has exhibited in a variety of venues in both open and juried shows, and her works are in private collections throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.
