Dynamics of Color with Ati Gropius Johansen
August 23-26, 3-6pm, $275

The color experiments of the Josef Albers color courses are the basis for the discoveries of this trip through the exciting world of color. Albers, best known as a painter and theorist, taught at the Bauhaus from 1925-33, and later at Black Mountain College and Yale University. His theory emphasizes the continually changing nature of color, the need to develop sensitivity to color and to understand how colors interact with each other and the eye. The Albers color curriculum is followed by Ati Gropius Johansen, graduate student of Albers and daughter of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. Through a series of exercises, Johansen uses Color-aid paper, collage and comparison techniques to sharpen perception and insight into color interactions and behavior.

In addition to being on the faculty of The deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, Ati Gropius Johansen has given courses and lectures at the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico; in Boston, MA at The Boston Architectural Center, Simmons College, and Historic New England; the Worcester Art Museum; Bridgewater State College; SUNY Dutchess; and the Walter Gropius Schule in Erfurt, Germany. Her earlier career as a children’s book illustrator and graphic designer included illustrations for some 46 books, an Art Directors Award, and numerous exhibition designs. She currently resides in Wellfleet, MA.
