The Ecologist's Eye: Reading Provincetown's Landscapes –
An Outdoor Field Sketching Workshop with Mark Adams
September 13-17, 3-6pm, $300

Provincetown's natural landscapes are culturally old and geologically new – the evidence is visible in the views we will sketch. We will visit a different location in and around Provincetown each day and look for clues that reveal how the view came to be. Field sketching techniques suitable to any situation, such as ink contour drawing, ink/watercolor washes and value studies will be demonstrated. Class members will each create their own field notebook through collected observations, notes and landscape sketches. I will show examples of natural history and geologic field notebooks and travel sketchbooks. Basic principles of coastal geology, wildlife habitat and cultural landscape history will be presented to support the direct observations of class members. We will read short selections from geologists Oldale and Strahler, travelers such as Bradford and Thoreau and cultural commentators such as Mary Heaton Vorse. Some recent scientific findings about topics such as dune movement, animal migration and coastal erosion will be discussed.
No specific experience or drawing skill is necessary – just a willingness to observe with an eye for detail. Most of the class will take place outdoors. Participants should be prepared for a variety of weather and walking conditions. Bring a spiral bound sketch book at least 11"x14" and a variety of pens, pencils, a watercolor brush, ink and a few watercolor tubes if you have them. Additional materials will be provided. This workshop includes morning access to the studio during non-class time.

His participation in the C-Scape Artist's Mapping Collaborative in Provincetown and the study of Japanese scroll painters have also been important influences. Of his work he has said, "I aspire to an approach that wanders between Lewis and Clark and Andy Goldsworthy." He has degrees in landscape architecture and ecology from the University of California, Berkeley and has exhibited his paintings and drawings on Cape Cod and the Islands since the 1980s, currently at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown. Other galleries have included DNA Gallery, Provincetown, MA; On the Vineyard Gallery, Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard; and the Oakland Museum, Oakland, CA. Adams currently resides in Truro, MA. He has been keeping travel sketchbooks for over 30 years.
