The Mercurial Sea: Painting Water and the Figure with Abraham Storer

The workshop will address the challenges of painting the figure in relation to the mercurial nature of water. Over this two-day intensive, we’ll work from the model at locations in Provincetown and look closely at the tradition of paintings of bathers, which typically merge the figure with the sea—including the works of Cezanne, Munch, Bonnard, Picasso, and David Park. Discussions on the formal conventions, as well as symbolic content of this tradition will inform our work.  Experience painting out of doors with oils is recommended.
Abraham Storer is a painter raised on Cape Cod and currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York.  He has shown his work at Alpha Gallery in Boston, Inman Gallery in Houston and the Painting Center in New York, receiving reviews in a number of publications including the Houston Chronicle, the Boston Globe, Art New England and the Provincetown Banner.  In addition to painting, he has taught at Boston University, Indiana University and Mercy College.  He holds an MFA in painting from Boston University and a BA from Brandeis University.
