Place and process are our concerns in this workshop, open to students of any experience level. Like realism or even impressionism, assemblage draws from the environment. And in the tradition of the mooncussers, we will scavenge and beachcomb the Provincetown shore for all sorts of unorthodox materials. Students will work with these pieces of Provincetown and assemble them into ironic, amusing and startling objects. The history of the art of assemblageincluding Kurt Schwitter’s architectural “merz” constructions, Joseph Cornell’s evocative arrangements in glass-covered boxes and Karel Appel’s fantastic agglomerationswill be discussed. Please bring a glue-gun, nails, screws, hammer, protective eye-wear, and a drill, if you have one. Directions to the artist’s studio will be supplied upon registration.
Sculptor Mike Wright uses found, painted wood and scavenged materials in her assemblages. She was recently awarded a Full Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. She was juried into the 2004 Cambridge Art Association National Competition, won second place in the 22nd Annual Juried Exhibition at Custer County Art Museum and won the National Competition at Provincetown Art Association and Museum in 1999, which resulted in a solo show. Her work is represented in many private collections and has been exhibited in numerous solo and juried shows in Japan, New York, Baltimore, Louisiana, Montana, the Cahoon Museum of American Art and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
