The Painterly Print: Plein-Air and Monotype Printmaking with Megan Hinton July 1-3, 9:30-4:30, $300

This class will engage students in exploring the intersection between plein-air painting and painterly printmaking, commonly known as monotype printing. During the first part of this three-day intensive, the class will meet outdoors to paint and draw the landscape. The second half of the day will be spent in the printmaking studio, using what was created in the field to inspire and make monoprints.

This approach will also allow for experimentation in both media, and a departure into less conventional forms of landscape painting. In the field students will be encouraged to paint and draw with their preferred media: gouache, watercolors, markers, and any other informal tools and surfaces found easy to use outdoors. Approaches to departing from traditional working methods will be explored. The monoprinting section of the course will introduce a variety of printmaking techniques, such as paper tearing, cognate images (the ghost print), re-registration, and chine collé. Casual group critique and analysis of student work will follow both landscape painting and monoprinting time. Some painting or printmaking experience is recommended.
