Bringing the Landscape into the Studio: A Painting Workshop with Rick Fleury, August 11, 13 & 14, 10-4:00pm, $300
This workshop is open to artists of all media interested in capturing the true essence of the landscape, and bringing that into the artist’s studio. Students will be lead in developing the skills of capturing the Cape landscape through photography, sketches and field notes, as well as through memory and visualization, and translating that information onto the canvas, or the artist’s preferred medium. Fleury will share first-hand translations of his interpretations of his own photographs and field notes into paintings, both in oil and watercolor, and will encourage students to develop their own skills, both in the field and in the studio.
The course will primarily take place in the studio, where artists will be interpreting their "information" and translating that into artistic landscapes. Students are encouraged to bring their own landscape photography into the first class, to be used as a starting point and an initial discussion. Subsequent classes will include short trips “into the field”exploring the beaches, moors and marshes of Provincetownto collect “information” from the landscape to be used in the studio.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rick Fleury has dedicated his professional life to painting coastal landscapes of New England. His approach to landscape and mastery of oil led the Cape Cod Museum of Art to honor him with a solo show in 2006. The Executive Committee of the Copley Society of Art, the oldest non-profit art association in the United States, was so impressed with his work, they sought him out in his Cape Cod studio and invited him to become a member. Rick’s work has also been juried to show at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and the Cotuit Center for the Arts, and the Cahoon Museum of American Art. It can be found in private collections throughout the United States and Europe, as well as in the permanent collections of the Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. He is represented by Addison Art Gallery in Orleans. |
