Exploring the Provincetown Print with Bill Evaul, August 18-22, 9:30-12:30pm, $300

The "Provincetown Print" or white-line, full-color woodcut is a relief printing process, utilizing one block only as the printing matrix. This workshop will provide participants with an in-depth exploration of the white-line print: from conceptualizing and creating a drawing, to wood carving, to paper selection, to printing the block, participants will be guided to create a series of unique and vibrant monoprints. An overview of the white-line’s genesis (developed in Provincetown in 1917) and historical context will be discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring photographs or sketches to use as a starting point for your prints.

This workshop includes afternoon access to the print studio during non-class time.

Bill Evaul is a painter and printmaker who studied at Syracuse University, the Whitney Museum and Pratt Institute with Jacob Landau and George McNeil. He received two fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and has lived and worked on the outer cape ever since, giving lectures, leading workshops, producing artwork in a variety of media, and specializing in the white-line woodcut.

As a contributing writer for Print Review and other magazines, he produced reviews and scholarly articles, including The Provincetown Printers: Genesis of a Unique Woodcut Tradition, which helped in the revival of the obscure and nearly lost technique. Evaul's work is in numerous public collections including The Library of Congress, Robert Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop, The Zimmerli Museum of Art at Rutgers University, The Georgia Museum of Art, The Sunrise Art Museum, The Kresge Art Museum, and The Provincetown Art Association & Museum.
