This workshop will lead students in drawing directly from the model, using pencil and charcoal, to develop individual expression, while exploring contour, gesture, and exercises in structure. Various approaches to drawing the figure will also emphasize movement, transparency of line, and pictorial composition. Previous experience in figure drawing is not required.
Materials:
Strathmore- or equivalent- Sketch Book, 14 x 17” (no smaller)- 100 sheets.
Or Newsprint pad 14 x 17” or 18 x 24”
Pencils: 4B, 6B Graphite
Charcoal Sticks- Soft, Compressed or Vine or
Conte Crayons (Soft) Black
Stiff Drawing Board.

Jack Coughlin is well known for his strong graphic portraits of literary figures and musicians. His prints, drawings and watercolors have been exhibited widely across the United States and in Europe and are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Collection of Arts in Washington, and in many other museum, university and library collections worldwide. A member of the National Academy of Design, he has received numerous awards and prizes and his literary portraits are regularly commissioned for the “New Republic.” |
