Absolute Beginners: Fundamentals of Landscape Painting en Plein Air, with John Clayton, June 16-20, 9-Noon, $300

Students will learn how to paint out of doors, including the set-up of paints and equipment. Instruction will focus on developing techniques to examine the visual components of landscape painting, including basic color relationships, patterns, and the understanding of light and shade. Each class will begin with a short demonstration by the instructor; students will also be given individual instruction within the group to address specific needs and levels of experience. Open to all levels—first-time painters welcome.

John Clayton is a plein air painter based in Provincetown. He studied in New York at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts, where he won the Mrs. Roberts Forbes Scholarship, The Arthur & Melville Phillips Scholarship, and an honorable mention from the Academy of Fine Art exhibition in 1998. He has also studied at the Cape Cod School of Art, where he developed an appreciation for the work and teaching of Charles Hawthorne. In 2000 he was featured in the Provincetown Art Association and Museum’s Emerging Artist exhibition, juried by Elizabeth Pearl. Clayton’s work can be found in Provincetown at the Egeli Gallery.
