Herman Maril, A Lecture with Christine McCarthy, August 11, 10-12:15pm, $125

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the American artist Herman Maril’s birth, which will be celebrated with an extensive exhibition at PAAM. In this lecture Ms. McCarthy will trace the development of Maril’s style, and examine the range and impact of his work, from his early experiments with Cubism to his selective and analytic landscapes.

Discussion will focus on Maril’s creative process, and the artist’s use of light, color and space in his elemental compositions, including domestic interiors and mountain-scapes, and the dunes and tidal flats of Provincetown. Comparisons with related paintings and drawings, and discussion of various painters who influenced and inspired the artist will further enrich participants understanding of Maril’s place in twentieth-century art.

Christine McCarthy is the Executive Director of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. She received her BA in Humanities/ Photography from Providence College and an MA in Museum Studies/Art History from Syracuse University. Bringing 20 years of museum experience to PAAM, Ms. McCarthy has held positions at The Yale University Art Gallery and the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery, as well as The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (ICA 1994 - 2001). From 1997-2001, McCarthy served as the ICA’s Director of Administration and Planning. She has taught classes in museum administration at PAAM and Cape Cod Community College, and is an adjunct faculty member at Boston University's Metropolitan College, where she teaches the graduate level course “Managing a Visual Arts Organization.”
