John
Clayton is a plein air painter based in Provincetown.
He studied in New York at the Art Students League
and the National Academy of Design School of Fine
Arts, where he won the Mrs. Roberts Forbes Scholarship,
The Arthur & Melville Phillips Scholarship,
and an honorable mention from the Academy of Fine
Art exhibition in 1998. He has also studied at the
Cape Cod School of Art, where he developed an appreciation
for the work and teaching of Charles Hawthorne.
In 2000 he was featured in the Provincetown Art
Association and Museums Emerging Artist exhibition,
juried by Elisabeth Pearl. Claytons work can
be found in Provincetown at the William Scott Gallery,
and The Fan Gallery in Philadelphia. For more examples

Please bring oil paints; a painting knife,
Brushes: two each #7, #5, #3 & #1 either flat,
round or filbert.
11x14 gessoed masonite boards or Canvas.
an outside easel and a wood palette (no paper palettes)
Gamsol or Sansodor for thinners & Galkyd or
Liquin for mediums
Colors: Winsor Newton paints are fine or Winton
Student Grade for beginners
light yellow (optional)
medium yellow
light red
medium red
orange permanent rose (optional)
magenta (optional)
ultramarine blue
manganese blue hue or Cerulean
indian red or burnt sienna
and a large tube of white.
