Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at PAAM

The Romanos Rizk Scholarship

Romanos Rizk, trained as a classical painter, came to Provincetown to study with Henry Hensche at his Cape School, and subsequently became a forty-year artist-member of PAAM. His lifelong pursuit of artistic excellence has inspired a scholarship at PAAM, named in his honor.
The Romanos Rizk Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to prospective students who have demonstrated talent, based on review of their portfolios, and their intentions to pursue a career in art. The award consists of a tuition credit of up to $1,000 per year for the study of painting or drawing at PAAM, and a certificate for art supplies during the period the recipient is a student at PAAM. There are no cash grants. The scholarship can be used for any classes at the Museum School at PAAM. Applicants must submit a one-page statement of artistic vision and a CD or slide portfolio of their work. Letters of recommendation as to the candidate’s potential and ability to develop artistic talent are encouraged, but not required.
Applications are due on or before JUNE 15, 2012.

Scholarship amounts will be allocated on the basis of: available funding; the number of applicants; and the quality/need of the applicants. Upon request, scholarships may be reviewed for renewal. Recipients accepted for scholarship must agree to certain conditions including regular attendance and commitment to classes, the promotion of PAAM in general, and participation in exhibition openings; exhibitions installation, and/or other minor volunteer capacities. Interested applicants may send their applications to Christine McCarthy, Executive Director at PAAM, 460 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA 02657.

This, and other Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at PAAM scholarships, exemplify our dedication to developing future generations of Provincetown artists. We are grateful for the generous donors who fund these efforts, in this case, Irma Ruckstuhl.

Provincetown Art Association and Museum is proud to announce the 2011 Romanos Rizk Memorial Scholarship Recipients.

The 2011 Rizk Scholarship recipients are Christa Marquez of Taos, New Mexico; Sophia Reznick of Provincetown, MA and Alexis Neider of Harlem, NY. Recipients are awarded tuition for a summer workshop of their choosing.

Marquez writes “As an emerging printmaker, I have dedicated myself to gaining education in a variety of ways as I build my portfolio. I came in search of viewing and learning more about the Provincetown Prints and the group of artists that began it. I was encouraged to see that you offer printmaking classes and in particular with Kathryn Smith teaching the Provincetown style of White Line printmaking. This is especially exciting to me and my interested in printing with woodblocks and exploration into more color work.”

Congratulations Christa, Sophia, and Alexis!

“I could not be more pleased with my experience at PAAM.  From the moment I walked in the door to the museum, I could tell that it was a place of warmth and creativity.  I'm impressed by the depth of PAAM-from powerful exhibits to excellent instruction.  The facilities, both at PAAM and at artists' studios are incredible.  I feel extraordinarily lucky to have been able to spend time in Vicky's studio and have the authentic experience of working alongside her in her space." - Alexis Neider, 2011 Romanos Rizk Scholarship Recipient

The Robyn Watson Scholarship

In memory of the late director’s dedication to quality education at PAAM, this scholarship to attend one summer workshop, is offered annually to a high school student from outer Cape Cod. Preference is given to Provincetown High School students, but this should not discourage other local students from applying.

Choose from over 60 workshops including painting, drawing, mixed media, computers, art history and printmaking. Workshops will run June through August, are generally 3 days to 1 week long, and are limited in size—from 6 to 12 students—to maintain a supportive and engaging art-making environment.

Applicants are asked to write a letter articulating their interest in a class, with alternate class choices (as some classes may be filled and closed to enrollment), along with information on financial need. Letters can be sent to Lynn Stanley, Curator of Education, PAAM, 460 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA O2657.  Applications accepted until scholarship is awarded.

Provincetown High School student Jared King was the recipient of the 2010 Robyn Watson Scholarship.  Jared studied with the painter Robert Henry, in Henry’s week-long workshop: Ink and Gouache: Drawing and Painting on Paper.  Workshop participants had access to the studio during non-class time to explore and develop ideas.  Of the experience Jared said,

"As a result of this opportunity to study with the painter Robert Henry, I gained a new perspective on the use of color and the use of new media—gouache and ink.  Before participating in PAAM’s Art Reach program, I had never taken art classes—being in a studio environment with older and more experienced people was intimidating and exhilarating at the same time. I would recommend this to other high school students for a number of reasons:  it’s a good experience overall, it’s good for your portfolio development, and you gain new perspectives as a result.  Studying at PAAM helped me grow—as an artist and a person—while expanding my understanding of other materials and media."
