Members' Exhibitions
Members’ Exhibitions at PAAM represent the work of contemporary artist-members of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Many of these artists live on Cape Cod either full-time or for part of the year. While the work varies greatly in media and approach, each artist-member joins a long roster of distinguished artists who have studied, taught, and exhibited at PAAM over the past 94 years.
Juried
In 1914, a group of visionary artists and local townspeople came together to form the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. This group recognized the need for an established arts institution on the Outer Cape. Today, PAAM continues to present juried exhibitions of artist-members’ works. Each show reflects the aesthetic judgment and curatorial eye of invited jurors.
Open
In the 1970’s, the PAAM membership voted to present “open” exhibitions, allowing any and all members to exhibit their work in PAAM’s galleries throughout the year. Members’ Open Exhibitions represent an eclectic and extensive body of work displayed in “salon” style that is, works that are stacked and tend to blanket the walls, versus the minimalist presentation most often seen in contemporary art galleries and museums. This practice was begun in Paris, France in the 19th century, where work was hung floor to ceiling and great paintings rubbed shoulders with the work of new and evolving artists. In the past 30 years, Members’ Open Exhibitions have become integral to our exhibition schedule. We’re sure you’ll find work that engages, amuses, and provokes.
Please read the Members' Exhibition Policies

Volunteer Profile: Christa Marquez
 |
|
Christa Marquez received her BFA in graphic design from The University of Kansas. She has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and printmaker with a studio in Williamsburg, VA and shows at the Tamarack Gallery in Omena, MI and the Taos Artist Co-op in Taos, NM. Christa first visited Provincetown last May with an interest in the white-line print history and process. She spent the summer at Penland School of Crafts as a print intern and then returned to PAAM this September to attend a White-line Print Class with Kathryn Smith.
While at PAAM this winter, Christa will be working on graphic design/marketing projects as well as supervising the print studio in exchange for use of the print studio. One personal project Christa is working on at PAAM is a book of poetry and prints, which she is scheduled to produce in Italy at the Venice Printmaking Studio for their Artist-in-Residency Program during the month of April. Over the winter in Provincetown she will also be doing commercial illustration work in her scratchboard style for a second book project with Llewelyn Worldwide. Christa is enjoying the artistic energy of Provincetown and looks forward to a creative winter at PAAM. Internships
FOR INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND APPLICATION INFORMATION, VISIT PAAM'S EMPLOYMENT PAGE
PAAM's interns have provided vital assistance to educational, archival, and administrative projects at PAAM. In addition to earning college credit, their internships have furthered their professionalism in the arts and arts administration.
PAAM understands the importance of apprenticeship, and is pleased to support the practical training of our future leaders in the arts. Assignments are flexible, and will accommodate the primary interests and talents of the intern. Full exposure to a wide array of projects and assignments can be expected.

PAAM's Summer 2011 Interns: left to right, Colin McGuire, Emma O’Leary, Lesley Marchessault, Ali Shapiro, Jasmine Hadley, Wendy Natter.
PAAM is incredibly grateful of its hard-working interns. Summer 2011 interns include:
Jasmine Hadley first interacted with PAAM through the Academy of Arts, Sciences, and Technology through Provincetown High School, helping to curate an end of the year exhibition each year. Now, she attends New York University, where she is a part of the Global Liberal Studies Program, working on a thesis about Claude Monet. Having grown up in Provincetown, she now works for Venture Athletics Kayak Shop and artSTRAND gallery.
Lesley Marchessault received her MA in Art History and Museum Studies Certification from Florida State University. She is spending her first summer in Provincetown, working at PAAM on upcoming exhibitions and events. Lesley has experience working as a curator and plans on pursuing that career in the fall.
Colin McGuire is a local artist here in Provincetown, currently showing at the McGuire Gallery in Provincetown and Eugene J. Quinn gallery in Rockport. "It will be a busy summer with local shows at the Blue Gallery and Truro Vineyards, an internship here at PAAM, as well as landscaping and bartending on a regular basis. After the summer, I will return to my studio in Beverly, MA, where I am a student at Montserrat College of Art, focusing in oil painting and experimenting with many forms of printmaking, drawing, and sculpture. When I find some free time, I go surfing. Surfing is where I find much inspiration for my artwork and also serves as a form of physical expression and exercise. I am looking forward to my internship here at PAAM, working in the print studio, helping in the classroom, and being involved with all the exciting shows here this summer".
Wendy B. Natter resides in Guilford, Connecticut. When her daughter went off to college, Wendy decided to return to school as well and left a career in IT to pursue her love of art. She is now a full-time student at the Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT working towards a BA in Illustration. Her daughter Rebecca is also entering her third year of college. Wendy enjoys all forms of arm, but is especially fond of painting people and landscapes in oil. She has spent many summers vacationing on the Cape and is thrilled to be part of the long and prestigious history of art in Provincetown as an intern at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
Emma O’Leary is an art student in a dual program at Northeastern University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Her media of choice are painting, drawing and animation. She grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and now lives in Boston during the year.
Ali Shapiro is an MFA candidate in poetry at the University of Michigan. Her poems have appeared in The Southeast Review, Linebreak, and Redivider, among others. She's won various prizes for her writing and other exploits, including a Dorothy Sargeant Rosenberg Poetry Prize, a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, and Bertlesmann World of Expression scholarship. Her writing has always been informed and supplemented by an interest in visual media, so she is thrilled to be a part of the artistic community at PAAM!
