Lamp Building Demonstration with Jody Johnson
Saturday, December 8, 9:30-Noon

Join local artist Jody Johnson to learn about opening up your mind to repurposing and reclaiming. Specializing in creating lamps from a variety of objects, Jody will demonstrate how she constructs these one-of-a-kind artwork, beginning with the initial thought “Can this even become a lamp?” Many examples of her exciting, functional pieces will be on hand.
Bring in an old lamp that needs rewiring and Jody will show you how to fix it! You’ll leave wanting to become a picker, making your trips to Ruthie’s, the Methodist Church, and the Swap Shop much more productive.

Provincetown’s own Jody Johnson is a self-taught artist whose philosophy in life is to just dive in head first and figure it out as she goes. This curiosity and willingness to try new things has led to four decades of creating in various mediums. She always looks for ways to re-purpose objects. Her current body of work focuses on lamps and jewelry. Since childhood she has been intrigued with taking things apart and using the pieces to create something new and even more spectacular.
Feel free to bring a pad and paper to take notes and a broken lamp that needs fixing.

Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain with Doug Ritter
January 19, 9:30-12:30pm

In this workshop we’ll learn the five skills to draw any object, based on Betty Edwards’ award-winning curriculum Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

This will be followed by self-portraiture. Join certified instructor and course facilitator Doug Ritter to explore how to see and draw differently.

Please bring 4 sheets of 11 x14” drawing paper; 2b, 4b and eb pencils; and a sketchbook.

Drawing the Face and the Space Around It with Debbie Nadolney
Saturday, February 23rd, 1-3pm

With the use of a model we'll look at ways of seeing which integrate the face with the space that exists around it. By opening up the form, perceiving relative relationships, and learning to let go of familiar notions of positive and negative space, you'll begin to see that all share an equal importance and are likewise mutually supportive. This awareness can be liberating and create some exciting possibilities in the process of finding your piece. Many artists have a natural tendency to freeze when drawing a face as they try to get a likeness. We'll work to dispel that stress by emphasizing the entire surface and letting the space define the form. You may be surprised at what may emerge.

Materials List:
Pad/Paper, a good eraser, and whatever you feel comfortable drawing with such as charcoal, conte crayon, or graphite. Feel free to draw with paint, if you prefer.

Debbie Nadolney was born in New York City in 1957. She moved to Boston in 1975 where she attended the Museum School, the Art Institute of Boston, and in 1982 received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art with honors in painting. During the 21 years spent living and working in the Boston area, she played in bands such as High Risk Group, participated in numerous exhibitions, and co-founded the Causeway Visual and Performing Artists, which was primarily dedicated to issues surrounding artist displacement. From 1994-95 she acted as manager and curator of the JP Art Market Gallery exhibiting works by both emerging and established artists, instructing figure drawing classes, and cultivating a performance space. In 1996, she moved back to her hometown of New York City where she began working on a comprehensive portrait series. Last January, Nadolney moved to Provincetown to open a 'live' exhibition space called AMP: Art Market Provincetown, featuring multi-disciplined work by contemporary artists, writers, performers, and musicians. Exhibitions primarily reflect cutting edge/process-based work which is often presented to the public while still in progress.

The Ritual as Self Portrait with Heather Hart
March 16, 9:30-12:30pm

Rituals are everywhere, whether they be lighting candles for ancestors, blowing out birthday candles or skipping a wishing rock on the ocean. Join us in spending some time exploring various iterations of ritual from around the world and talking about it in the context of contemporary art. Students will use assemblage to create a shrine that will be the heart of a ritual they invent in class. Each shrine will be made for a viewer to wish upon, garnished with gold leaf as a Buddha sculpture.

Based in Brooklyn, NY, Heather Hart was an artist in residence at Skowhegan, RBPW, Santa Fe Art Institute and at the Whitney ISP. She received grants from Harvestworks, Jerome Foundation and a fellowship from NYFA. Her work has been included in a variety of publications and exhibited worldwide including at Socrates Sculpture Park, Studio Museum in Harlem, Art in General, Rush Arts Gallery, Museum of Arts and Craft in Itami, Portland Art Center and Brooklyn Museum. She studied at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Princeton University in New Jersey and received her MFA from Mason Gross School of the arts at Rutgers University. Hart is currently a Visual Fellow at Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown, MA.

Here’s what some of the students had to say about their members-only winter workshops experience:

“I particularly liked the small, more intimate sharing of ideas and use of the medium…It was a rewarding experience.”

“I learned a lot….The studio equipment is excellent. The room bright and comfortable to work in. I was impressed at the care that is taken to use and re-use good materials for clean-up—such as vegetable oil for our hands and the glass inking panels, old phone books to wipe the ink on, etc. That is so much better than the old days when there were lots of solvents around print studios.”

“The three instructors were outstanding and put so much effort into their presentation. They were so giving!!! I had started to write a letter, because I was so appreciative for such a wonderful workshop.”

“[I enjoyed] getting to spend the afternoon with your artistic peers, learning something new from someone out there working in the field. The conundrum of an uplifting - down-to-earth experience. Lovely.”

“The instructor was extremely well-prepared and was an available and supportive teacher. I also enjoyed the sense of community among the students. PAAM is supportive also of its members, providing experiences like this as a benefit of membership. Thanks to all of PAAM for providing this fun and educational benefit to members. I love the experience and the enthusiasm and wished I lived just a little bit closer.”

Members' Exhibitions

Members’ Exhibitions at PAAM represent the work of contemporary artist-members of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.  Many of these artists live on Cape Cod either full-time or for part of the year.  While the work varies greatly in media and approach, each artist-member joins a long roster of distinguished artists who have studied, taught, and exhibited at PAAM over the past 94 years.

Juried
In 1914, a group of visionary artists and local townspeople came together to form the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.  This group recognized the need for an established arts institution on the Outer Cape.  Today, PAAM continues to present juried exhibitions of artist-members’ works.  Each show reflects the aesthetic judgment and curatorial eye of invited jurors.

Open
In the 1970’s, the PAAM membership voted to present “open” exhibitions, allowing any and all members to exhibit their work in PAAM’s galleries throughout the year. Members’ Open Exhibitions represent an eclectic and extensive body of work displayed in “salon” style – that is, works that are stacked and tend to blanket the walls, versus the minimalist presentation most often seen in contemporary art galleries and museums.  This practice was begun in Paris, France in the 19th century, where work was hung floor to ceiling and great paintings rubbed shoulders with the work of new and evolving artists.  In the past 30 years, Members’ Open Exhibitions have become integral to our exhibition schedule.  We’re sure you’ll find work that engages, amuses, and provokes.
