Applications for the 2012 grant cycle are now available.

The late Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed were former students of Hans Hofmann who studied with him in both New York and Provincetown. They were very active at PAAM as artist members, instructors in the summer school, and they served on a variety of committees throughout their 50 years on Cape Cod. Lillian, in particular, was sensitive to the challenges artists face, especially those working against the mainstream or outside of popular schools of art. Her desire to provide financial support to mature artists through this generous endowment gift speaks to her passionate commitment to art for art’s sake and art created regardless of the demands and whims of the market place.

Grants are offered to American painters aged 45 or older who demonstrate financial need. The primary emphasis is to promote public awareness and a commitment to American art, as well as encouraging interest in artists who lack adequate recognition.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Applicants must be American painters 45 years or older at the time of
    application.
For the purposes of this grant, ‘painting’ is considered the application of
various media (acrylic, gouache, ink, oil, pastel, tempera, watercolor) on
paper, canvas, fabric, or wood. This excludes mixed media, digital
paintings, prints, and drawings. Do not submit images of mixed media,
drawings, sculpture, or prints. Only paintings will be considered.

  • A need for financial support must be clear and demonstrated.

  • Applications must be submitted by an individual working artist; organizations cannot apply.

  • Only one application may be submitted per individual during each round of funding.

  • Artist groups or duos may apply. Multiple artists applying together must
have an established history of collaboration. Artist groups should complete
the application form together, but submit individual financial statements.

  • Applicants must be either citizens of the United States or have permanent residency in the United States, though they can be presently living abroad.
Application and Notification Dates
  • Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by April 2, 2012.
Hand-delivered applications must be delivered to PAAM by 5:00 PM on April 2,
2012. Late applications will not be accepted. Grant recipients will receive
an official notification letter via email or mail (if no email address is
supplied) by July 1, 2012. There is no personal feedback given by jurors. No
part of the application can be completed online.
Awards
  • Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000. Generally, there will be three or four
grants awarded annually. There are no reporting requirements, nor
stipulations to how the grant funds are used. Recipients will receive
payment in two installments. This is subject to change without notice.

  • While recipients are not required to become involved with or give back to
PAAM, we encourage grantees to become PAAM members, explore the
possibilities of giving a lecture, taking or leading a workshop.
Review Process
  • Complete and on-time applications will be reviewed by the Grant Review
Committee. The Committee is made up of no less than three nationally
renowned artists, art historians, and curators. Incomplete or late
    applications will not be reviewed.
Review Criteria
  • The review criteria for the grant are artistic quality, creative ability as evidenced by images of work submitted, and financial need.
Anonymity
  • Applications will be judged anonymously. Each applicant will be assigned a number and will not be identified by name.
Return of Application Material
  • Due to the high volume of applicants, we are not able to return materials.
Please do not send original works of art.
Credit and Publicity Responsibilities
  • Grant recipients are required to follow PAAM’s Credit and Publicity Requirements.
Taxation
  • According to IRS Publication 525, funds received qualify as taxable income and must be reported on tax returns.
Access Policy
  • PAAM does not discriminate on the basis of age, ancestry, color, creed,
disability, gender, health status, marital status, national origin, race,
religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
Conflict of Interest
  • To ensure that the Grant Review Committee members are free from conflicts of
interest and/or the appearance of such conflicts, members are required to
disclose any current or prospective affiliations they or their immediate
family members have with an actual or potential applicant. “Affiliations”
applies to employment, board memberships, independent contractual
relationships, advisory or policy relationships, substantial contributor
relationships, or other financial relationships. Members are required to
disclose any past or current adversarial relationships with actual or
potential applicants of a professional or personal nature. Grant Review
Committee members are not permitted to participate in discussions or votes
relating to any applicant with whom they have an affiliation or relating to
any applicants competing with that applicant.
