Join us for a series of Gallery Conversations with jurors, artists, and curators to discuss the works in current exhibitions on display at PAAM.
Gallery Conversations run monthly from October May, creating an interactive FREE learning experience during this quieter time of year.
These are similar to the Opening Conversations that were held during exhibition potlucks and 1970s and even back to Forum 49, a series programs during summer 1949.

|
This series supported in part by the Wolfman Trust, an anonymous donor, and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
|
PAAM proudly announces the receipt of a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) in support of the Gallery Conversation series. This series which began in Fall 2011 offers insight into current exhibitions at PAAM and increases free off-season offerings to the public. Conversations include tours of the galleries with the participating artist(s) or focus on broader discussion on how jurors select artworks, etc.
The AFCC desribes their grant program as providing the opportunity to give cash awards in support of the artistic and cultural activities of local Cape Cod artists and organizations for Cape Cod-based projects. Grant projects support the broadest goals of the Arts Foundation by supporting a strong, stable, and diverse arts and culture industry on Cape Cod, and contribute to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region.

Albert Edel Etchings with Curator Amy Whorf McGuiggan.

Edel’s Provincetown etchings are described by exhibition curator Amy Whorf McGuiggan as “mostly the comings and goings of the Portuguese fisherman along the waterfront…[the etchings] convey a strong sense of place and a vision of a now largely bygone time”.
Having grown up in the Provincetown arts community, McGuiggan became familiar with the work of Albert Edel later in life upon receiving two of his etchings as a birthday gift. “.. the utter charm and artistic quality of the small, intimate scenes of Provincetown’s working waterfront captured my attention.”
In conjunction with the exhibition on display April 19-June 2 with an opening reception April 26 at 6pm.

Susan Baker, Local Painter and Featured Artist
Saturday, November 3, 1pm
Local painter Susan will be available alongside her work in the exhibition Painting a Building: Building a Painting/The Art of Susan Baker.
A member of the Provincetown and Truro communities since the ‘60s, join Susan in a conversation tied to historic and contemporary times.

The recent work of artist Susan Baker combines a lifelong passion for sculpture with the two-dimensional surface, wedding a unique style to serious content. Bold architectural details and echoes of the locale within the frame act as gloss on the paintings’ text, and their synthesis is illuminating and emphatic. In her depictions of religious structures, originally based out of her experience studying in Rome during college, we see not a comment on religions itself, but rather a commentary on construction and art itself. “Baker’s work has always been remarkably frank, in no sense risqué, irreverent, or confrontational…without trickery or illusion. It’s classically honest: saying I was here, this is what I saw,” writes curator Pasquale Natale.
|
Baker attended the Rhode Island School of Design and spent her senior year in Rome as part of the European Honors Program. From 1969-1970 she was a Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachussetts. She has received grants from the Massachusetts Foundation for the Arts, the Women's Studio Workshop, Rosendale, NY and from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. Her gallery, The Susan Baker Memorial Museum, has become a sort of landmark in North Truro on Cape Cod.
