LOCATION:
Francescas, Aquitaine, Lot et Garonne, France
Aquitaine-Gascony is a rich, fertile valley. With Atlantic seaports,
numerous rivers and vast farms, this area provides its inhabitants
with fresh foods as well as magnificent scenery. Various market
villages have had the same morning market day since the Middle
Ages. The Garonne Valley’s mild winters allow for comfortable
traveling any time of year. The village of Francescas is one of
only a dozen Bastide Villages in the region. While its inhabitants
number less than five hundred, it is neither isolated, nor without
commerce. The village contains a post office, pharmacy, tobac,
charcuterie, boulangerie, bank, grocery, regional wood museum,
small hotel/restaurant/ bar, and a grand restaurant.

ITINERARY:
As a “working” week (or two), the routine will be vigorous and rich and designed for those who intend to work in the studio at least 5 hours a day. Studio work will be combined with excursions to nearby villages and marketplaces. Most mornings are spent working in the studio with daily instruction, discussion and critiques. Lunches are normally on one’s own: gathering fresh market products to eat in the garden or sitting in local a café (favorites). Typically, participants will travel after lunch, either by car or on foot through the countryside, to a Medieval village or outdoor market; here participants will sketch or be free to venture and wander. Afternoon schedules will be flexible, based on student’s interests and needs. Please bring a sketchbook for sketching and journaling on site.
TRANSPORTATION:
Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to Agen, which is 15 minutes from Francescas by car. You may prefer to fly into Paris on Saturday to allow for an overnight stay before heading on to Agen. Arrange-ments should be made to arrive at the Charles De Gaul Airport and transfer to the TGV train to Agen, a five-hour train ride. There is normally one late morning TGV train from CDG Airport to Agen. Alternatives: from the airport, take the Airfrance Bus or underground to Montparnasse Gare. From there one can take several TGV trains to Agen. Upon arrival to Agen, participants will be picked up and brought to their accom-modations. For more information about transportation in France go to www.voyages-sncf.com. For TGV train information, go to www.raileurope.com and for airport information, go to www.internationalairport. eu/Charles_De_Gaulle_Airport.
CHOICE OF LOCAL ACCOMMODATIONS:
If one is willing to share a large semiprivate bath with a friend, the best option is the Bed and Breakfast in the village, which is a beautifully decorated, spacious, old farm house. The owner chef is a very fine cook/baker. As Europeans do not always require a private bath, there is occasionally a free bath for private use here, with a surcharge of 10 euros per evening. The village Hotel de la Paix is a typical small village hotel with basic, clean rooms. The hotel serves simple breakfasts and dinners. Private baths are available here. Agen is 15 min. from Francescas by car.
