Landscape and Mood with Christie Scheele
May 15-17, 9:30-1:30pm, $300
 |
 |
In this workshop students can paint indoors or out, bringing work back to the studio for critique. The instructor will be in the studio to demo her techniques and provide feedback on work done both in and out, emphasizing tonalism and mood through color, shape, composition and the narrative contained in every landscape painting. Massing of shapes and reducing detail to create drama will be a theme of the workshop.
|
Tips for nearby spots for alla fresca work will be provided. All painting is about mood, and the landscape as subject matter is sublimely so. In this workshop, we break down what elements of a painting create strong currents of serenity, nostalgia, joy, melancholy, and subtle combinations of these. Color, content, and composition contribute to the mood of a painting, so we do exercises in color-mixing and composition, as well as discuss how these elements coalesce into the feel of a landscape in front of reproductions of some of my favorite landscape painters. In the studio, using photographic reference, we freely explore the mood of any palette, season, or time of day, aiming not to manipulate but to be sensitive to the mood we create. All levels welcome.

No Fear Painting: A Plein Air Painting Class with Mary Giammarino
May 21-25, 1-4pm, $300
|
|
| “Everything Under the Sun is Beautiful.” Charles Hawthorne
In this course we will be studying and applying many of the fundamental techniques of plein air painting. Together, we will investigate light and its effect on our visual field and how to translate that onto a canvas. We will not employ formulas; there is no “correct” way to paint and no such thing as a “mistake.” It is my goal to equip you with the tools necessary for a lifetime of exploration with plein air painting. This workshop includes morning access to the studio during non-class time. All levels welcome.

Mary Giammarino graduated from Greenfield Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Fine Art and continued her college work at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on an art scholarship. In 1989, she began studying painting at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, working with Hilda Neily, John Ebersberger, and Cedric and Joanette Egeli, returning every year to paint and study the Cape Cod light. She has had numerous solo shows and exhibitions in Provincetown, Philadelphia, and Vermont. She lives in Vermont with her sculptor husband, John Cassin, and their two German Shepherds, and conducts workshops in plein air painting at PAAM and in Brattleboro, Vermont. www.marygiammarino.com

PAST CLASSES:
Plein Air Painting with John Clayton
April 30-May 4, 1-4pm, $300
This class is designed for folks who are who have always wanted to paint as well as painters who want to learn more about painting. You don't need to be talented, you only have to give yourself permission to try.
Understanding of composition, perspective and values will be learned. John will do a demonstration on creating a simple painting. Each student will do one or two studies to learn the landscape and still life, using a palette knife. By organizing the shapes in color and limiting the palette, simple paintings can be created narrowing down the endless details and making the overall experience fun and enjoyable. Class will take place outdoors and in the studio.
John Clayton is a plein air painter based in Provincetown. He studied in New York at the Art Students League and the National Academy School, where he won the Mrs. Robert Forbes Scholarship, The Arthur & Melville Phillips Scholarship, and an honorable mention from the Academy of Fine Art exhibition in 1998. He has also studied at the Cape Cod School of Art, where he developed an appreciation for the work and teaching of Charles Hawthorne. In 2000 he was featured in PAAM’s Emerging Artist exhibition, juried by Elisabeth Pearl. Clayton’s work can be found in Provincetown at the Egeli Gallery.
