PAST CLASSES:

Painting and Drawing Critiques with Selina Trieff in Wellfleet
November 10, $275

Join us in Wellfleet at renowned artist teacher Selina Trieff's studio to receive feedback on your paintings or drawings. In addition to Trieff's insight, the group will also help you to see what is and isn't working in a piece. Critiques will occur during each session along with time to work after critiques are completed. The weekly schedule allows students to receive feedback on  a piece, go home and work on it, and then bring it back to the group to see how its progressed. This workshop provides a safe, comfortable setting to receive creative feedback. Trieff encourages students to experiment, push their own boundaries, and work outside of their comfort zone.

The work of known artists is utilized to illustrate a variety of issues and approaches during our sessions together. Please bring four to five original pieces of work to each session. You may also want to bring paper and pen for notes or a sketchbook. Any drawing or painting materials can be used.

Selina Trieff studied with Hans Hofmann in New York and Provincetown. She received a BA from Brooklyn College where she studied with Ad Reinhardt and Mark Rothko. She is represented by the Berta Walker Gallery in Provincetown, George Billis Gallery in New York, and the Ruth Bachofner Gallery in California. She has shown extensively in the U.S. and in Europe. Her work is represented in many public and private collections, and she has taught at various colleges and art schools.

Calligraphy with Rick Paulus

Monoline variations and interpretation of text
November 5, 9:30-4pm, $125

We will explore and experiment with the visual interpretation of text, capturing mood and meaning through the use of calligraphic hands, textures, color and layout.

The Illuminated Letter
November 12, 9:30-4pm, $125.

From classic, historical scripts, to modern interpretation, we will embark on an illuminating exercise in creating decorative letters for all occasions.

After becoming established in Washington, DC, beginning with his work at the legendary Tolley Studio, Rick Paulus was selected to be the engrosser for the State Department.  Eight years later, he was appointed Chief Calligrapher of the White House.  In 2006, he returned to his beloved Cape Cod where he continues to produce meaningful calligraphic works in his scriptorium at the edge of the continent.  In this special PAAM lecture, we will venture into a short tour of modern-day expressive calligraphy and the current influences on the future of this historical art form.

Calligraphy Basic with Rick Paulus
October 29, 9:30-4pm , $125

While exploring a variety of hands, we will discuss the interaction of tools, materials and technique.  Students will learn how to observe and identify the critical design elements which make up all calligraphic hands, and they will experiment with tools and materials in their quest to form the perfect letter!

Balancing Energies: Design for Everyone with Carol Odell
October 29-30, 10-4pm, $300

Knowing the elements of design is essential to creating a strong structure for all kinds of artwork and the key for bringing any composition to completion. By learning the fundamentals, the artist (beginner or advanced) is better able to analyze works and correct compositional problems regardless of the style of art.

This workshop is designed to help the artist compose paintings that emphasize strong design regardless of style. Participants will be encouraged to explore compositions based on experimentation, intuitive process and improvisational techniques in a number of visual exercises or over a short time. Individual instruction will be on-going and group discussions of works will occur each day.
The class will be about producing preliminary studies, sketches or exercises not finished work. Line, texture, form, values, color, etc. will all be considered and discussed.

Trained as an oil painter at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Carol Odell has worked in commercial design, textiles and photography. Her improvisational, non-objective, color-expressive works are created in oil, encaustic (beeswax medium), or monotype.  Beginning with a non-representational structure, she builds paintings with an eye to creating an imagined space with non-specific references to the natural world.  Recently she gave workshops at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Cape Cod Art Association, Kutztown University, as well as in her Chatham studio. She has mentored local high school art students in the Schools to Careers program. She is a member of and participates in group exhibitions with the Printmakers of Cape Cod, the Monotype Guild of New England, 21 in Truro, and New England Wax.  Her works are represented by the Left Bank Gallery of Wellfleet and Orleans. She and her husband, artist Tom Odell, have owned and operated Odell Studios Gallery in Chatham for 35 years. Her works are in private, corporate, and museum collections. www.odellarts.com.

Surface as Metaphor with Anne Flash
October 5, 12, 19 & 26, 1-4pm, $250 plus a $10 materials fee

In this process-oriented drawing/mixed media workshop, we will explore various methods and meanings connected to SURFACE ---- both practically and conceptually. Nonlinear narratives will be developed through selective procedures such as marking, rubbing, layering, erasing, scratching, smudging, staining, blotting, etc. Chance operations and time-mapping will be used as ways to generate composition. All sorts of 2-D images, including photographic and copier images will be considered fair game. A scanner and printer will be provided during the workshop, as well as various other toys and tools. Each participant can expect to take away an exciting set of work that pushes beyond his/her own conventions into new creative territory.

Anne Flash received her MFA in painting from Hunter College in New York City and her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. She taught at Trinity College in Hartford for four years, before moving to Cape Cod. In the 1990's, she was granted two residencies at Yaddo and one at the Millay Colony for the Arts. Flash has been teaching drawing at Cape Cod Community College for the past six years, and was an artist-in-residence at the college in 2008. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Boston, Connecticut, and Provincetown and is in private and corporate collections throughout New England. She believes, as an artist and as a teacher, that drawing exists at the core of all art, and is therefore an essential practice for artists.

The Art of Collage with Karen Cappotto
September 13-15, 10-2pm, $300 plus a $15 materials fee

Collage is a layering of thoughts and ideas as well as of paper, printed materials, graphite and paint. To the collagist, the very gathering of materials adds yet another layer of meaning. This workshop will explore basic materials and techniques used in collage and mixed media pieces. The emphasis will be on ways to apply a variety of techniques to mixed-media collage while developing a personal style. Demonstrations and discussions will encourage participants to rediscover or develop methods of layering images, paper, paint, and glue.

There will be assignments provided for those seeking direction or help in overcoming creative blocks; other students may work independently on their own projects. Bring materials to class that inspire or that you would like to work with. Some additional materials will be made available for further exploration. A materials list is available for those not familiar with the medium.

Karen Cappotto studied fine art and graphic design at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Cappotto’s paintings and collages can be found in various private and corporate collections. She exhibits regularly at The Schoolhouse Gallery, in Provincetown, Palm Beach, FL, and Ireland. This spring, Karen has launched her own company, PEG+DICK specializing in cards and custom collage. Go to www.peganddick.com for more details.
